Caption

Metrosideros elegans (Carpolepis elegans is a synonym). New Caledonia. Jellyman Walk, western end. This large specimen, received from the Wellington City Council as Meansia aurea, was planted on 20/10/1981 (Planting Book 1981-1983: 2). It is the only specimen in the Park of a species that is very rare in cultivation in New Zealand. Numerous flower buds 23/2/2011. (flowering May – I couldn’t see any flowers on the tree on 26/6).
