This 'Pukekura Park Portal Project' was developed by Elise Smith and Linda Way for the 'Taranaki Educational Resource: Research, Analysis and Information Network' (T.E.R:R.A.I.N.). The Friends of Pukekura Park, New Plymouth Inc. volunteered to give their time and resources to support the pilot project, in partnership with Puke Ariki Museum and Library, and supported on the technical GIS side by New Plymouth District Council. The project was funded from the National Digital Strategy's Community Partnership Fund.

The Friends have made a start in digitising some of their many resources, and loading them to the kete. The Geographic Information System provides an online mapping service to locate the places and plants described.

Visit the T.E.R:R.A.I.N. website http://www.terrain.net.nz/ and see how other community groups are using Geographic Information Systems to map environmental projects, and keep resources in the Aotearoa Peoples' Network kete.

The Taranak community groups involved in T.E.R:R.A.I.N. are:

  • Friends of Pukekura Park
  • Friends of Te Henui
  • New Zealand Herpetological Society
  • Nga Motu Marine Reserve Society
  • Rotokare Scenic Reserve Society
  • Royal Forest and Bird Society, Taranaki branches
  • Taranaki Kiwi Trust

T.E.R:R.A.I.N.  sets out to digitise community data and create a resource of georeferenced material suitable for analysis using Geographic Information Systems. Under access agreements the public use of the information will be allowed for non-profit purposes.

Who's involved with Kete Pukekura?

Conception: The Friends of Pukekura Park realised that the number of resources concerning the Park were too large to hold on a conventional website. Conversations with our friendly web host SmokeyLemon and Katipo Communications led us to the kete.

Partners: The Friends of Pukekura Park New Plymouth Inc. have been the partnered by Puke Ariki and the New Plymouth District Council. Many meetings over the two years were spent in discussion to ensure smooth project governance.

Funders: The National Digital Strategy : Community Partnership Fund (Ministry of Internal Affairs)

Mentors: The project was assisted by professional mentors from within the Friends of Pukekura Park to ensure digital standards, metadata and data-structure were to the highest possible standard.

Workers: A combination of voluntary workers and advisers toiled to organise the structure and function of the kete, and then upload the content.
